A group of women in Egbema Ozubulu, a community in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, have taken swift traditional action by banishing an elderly man accused of raping a married woman.
In a video that quickly spread across social media, dozens of women are seen marching the man out of the community, chanting "onye ohi otu" — an Igbo term meaning "private parts thief" — as they escorted him to the outskirts. The women declared him unfit to remain among them, enforcing what local sources describe as a longstanding communal sanction for grave offenses, particularly those involving sexual violence against married women.
According to residents, the decision followed an emergency meeting convened by women leaders and elders after the alleged victim came forward with her complaint. One local, speaking anonymously, explained that in their tradition, women often lead the response to such allegations. "This isn't the first time we've handled things this way when serious accusations like this surface," the resident said.
The incident has sparked heated debate online. Some Nigerians have applauded the women for standing firmly against sexual assault and protecting one of their own, viewing it as a bold act of communal justice. Others, however, have raised questions about due process, arguing that allegations should be thoroughly investigated by authorities before any punishment is meted out.
As of now, the Anambra State Police Command has not issued any statement on the matter. Efforts to reach spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga for comment were unsuccessful. It remains unclear whether the alleged victim has formally reported the case to the police or if an official investigation is underway. While traditional mechanisms play a strong role in many Igbo communities, critics worry that bypassing legal channels could lead to miscarriages of justice.
Supporters counter that delays in the formal system often leave victims without timely recourse. The banishment has once again highlighted the tension between customary practices and modern legal standards in handling sexual violence cases across Nigeria.
