Residents of Ipele, a quiet agrarian community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, were thrown into chaos on New Year's Eve when around 20 armed gunmen stormed the town and set the local divisional police station ablaze.
The attack happened late on December 31, 2025, just as many people were preparing for crossover services or settling in for the night. Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene: the assailants arrived in a commando-like fashion around 10 p.m., firing guns sporadically and forcing families to flee into nearby bushes for safety."It was a terrorist attack," one resident told reporters anonymously, still shaken by the ordeal. "They came heavily armed, overwhelmed the officers on duty, and targeted the police station directly.
The gunfire went on for over an hour before they set the building on fire."The blaze completely destroyed the police facility, along with several exhibits stored inside. Thankfully, no lives were reported lost in the incident, though the community remains on edge.Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Abayomi (also referred to as Funmilayo Odunlami in some reports), confirmed the attack shortly after it occurred.
He noted that tactical teams and other security forces were quickly deployed to the area.Commissioner of Police CP Adebowale Lawal strongly condemned the assault, calling it a "tragic and reprehensible act" against the state's peace and security.
He assured residents that joint operations involving the police, military, and civil defence are underway to track down the perpetrators and restore calm. Rumors of attacks on churches were firmly dismissed by authorities.
As investigations continue into the motive behind the brazen strike, locals are calling for stronger security measures in the region, especially after past threats in Ondo State. The incident has cast a shadow over the new year celebrations, leaving Ipele residents hopeful for swift justice.
