The political rift in Rivers State took another sharp turn when Victor Giadom, the APC's National Vice Chairman for the South-South zone, openly declared that Governor Siminalayi Fubara would need the backing of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike to secure any significant victory in the state.
Giadom made these remarks on December 30 during Wike's thank-you visit to the people of Gokana Local Government Area. Speaking to a crowd of supporters, he praised Wike as a "dependable leader" whose influence remains unmatched in local politics. "I guarantee, on behalf of my brothers, that the Gokana people are solidly behind Wike and President Tinubu," Giadom said. "Nobody will challenge his hold here.
Gokana is a no-go area for anyone else – even the governor. For Fubara to win anything in Gokana, or frankly anywhere in Rivers, he must go through Wike."The comments come amid the ongoing power struggle between Wike and Fubara, his former ally turned rival. Wike, who helped propel Fubara to the governorship, has been at odds with him over control of the state's political machinery.
Tensions escalated further after recent defections and claims over party leadership in the APC.Other local leaders echoed Giadom's loyalty. Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Dumle Maol, promised unwavering support, saying the people would follow Wike "every step of the way." Gokana council chairman Confidence Deko also pledged full allegiance, adding, "Wherever you go, we will go."Wike, in response, thanked the crowd for their past support and emphasized unity across party lines in Rivers, noting that both APC and PDP members are working together under President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
He urged patience and promised continued collaboration for the state's development. As the 2027 elections loom, these statements underscore Wike's enduring grip on grassroots politics in Rivers, leaving Fubara facing a tough challenge to build independent strength.
