Ghanaian authorities arrested 141 individuals believed to be Nigerian nationals on suspicion of running organized cybercrime networks.
The raids targeted hideouts in the Tabora and Lashibi suburbs of Greater Accra, dealing a significant blow to groups involved in mobile money fraud, business email compromise scams, romance scams, sextortion, and wire fraud.Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George (commonly known as Sam George), announced the arrests, praising the coordinated effort by the Cyber Security Authority, Ghana Police Service, National Security, and Ghana Immigration Service. "This morning's intelligence-led swoop disrupted cells that have been preying on victims both in Ghana and abroad," he said.
Of the total arrests, 100 suspects were apprehended in Tabora, while 41 were taken into custody in Lashibi. Authorities also detained a Ghanaian landlord accused of renting his property to around 100 of the suspects, sending a clear warning to property owners about harboring criminal activities.During the operation, officers seized 38 laptops and approximately 150 mobile phones believed to be tools of the trade for these scams. Forensic experts are now analyzing the devices to uncover links to specific fraud cases and potential international victims.
Sam George emphasized Ghana's openness to legitimate visitors and businesses from neighboring countries, including Nigeria. "We welcome all friends interested in honest enterprise," he stated. "But if you're here to commit cybercrime, we'll track you down, arrest you, and prosecute you fully under our laws."The minister urged citizens to stay alert and report any suspicious online or financial activities, highlighting the importance of public cooperation in safeguarding Ghana's growing digital economy.
This crackdown comes amid rising concerns over cyber-enabled crimes in the region and follows similar operations earlier in the month. Investigations are ongoing, with prosecutors preparing charges against those found guilty.
