A 17-year-old boy has been charged with murder following the tragic stabbing of 23-year-old John Temitope Onetufo in south-east London on New Year's Eve.The incident occurred around 12:35pm on December 31, 2025, when police rushed to Grove Street in Lewisham after reports of a stabbing.
Officers, along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance, found Onetufo suffering from a serious stab wound to the chest. Despite desperate efforts to save him, the young man from Deptford was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons due to his age, was formally charged on January 5, 2026. He is due to appear at Bromley Magistrates' Youth Court.
Two other individuals—a 23-year-old man arrested on January 2 on suspicion of murder and an 18-year-old woman detained on January 4 on suspicion of perverting the course of justice—have been released on bail as inquiries continue.
The killing has once again highlighted concerns over knife crime in the capital, particularly its impact on communities, including Nigerians living in the UK. Detectives are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward to help piece together the events leading to this senseless loss of life.
