Yobe Hisbah Imposes Strict Ban on Opposite-Sex Interactions in Public Transport and Gatherings

Damaturu, Yobe State – In a move aimed at upholding Islamic principles, the Yobe State Hisbah Commission has announced a new directive prohibiting physical contact and private conversations between men and women in commercial vehicles and at public events.

The announcement came on December 31, 2025, through a statement issued by the State Commander, Dr. Muhammad Yawudi Kale, with full approval from the Commission's Chairman, Dr. Yahuza Hamza Abubakar. The rules specifically target interactions on commercial tricycles (known locally as Keke Napep), motorcycles, and during public gatherings, describing such behavior as contrary to Sharia teachings.

"The Yobe State Hisbah Commission wishes to inform the public and issue a warning regarding activities that contradict the teachings of Sharia," the statement emphasized. It highlighted concerns over physical interactions between opposite genders on vehicles and in crowded public settings, as well as other issues like reckless driving during celebrations.

This latest directive builds on the Commission's ongoing efforts to curb social vices in the state. Hisbah officials have been active in recent months, conducting raids on brothels and liquor outlets, and promoting moral values aligned with Islamic and cultural norms.

Supporters see it as a necessary step to protect societal decency, while others may question how it will be enforced in everyday life, especially in busy transport hubs.

The Commission has called on residents to comply fully, urging community cooperation to maintain peace and religious harmony in Yobe State. Enforcement details are expected to roll out soon, with Hisbah personnel likely monitoring compliance in markets, roads, and event venues.
