Nigerian Senator Godiya Akwashiki Dies at 52 in Indian Hospital


 Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who passed away at the age of 52 while undergoing treatment in a hospital in India. Family sources confirmed the sad news on Thursday, revealing that the senator succumbed to a prolonged illness on Wednesday, December 31, 2025—New Year's Eve.

Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the National Assembly on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), had been battling health challenges since his reelection in 2023. He received medical care in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and finally India, though details of his exact ailment were never publicly disclosed.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah village, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Akwashiki built a reputation as a grassroots politician deeply committed to his constituents. 

He made history as the only senator from Nasarawa North to win two consecutive terms since the state's creation, first elected in 2019 and reelected in 2023.Before entering the Senate, he served multiple terms in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, rising to become Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker. In the upper chamber, he chaired the Senate Committee on Air Force and was known for pushing constituency projects that touched lives across his district—from infrastructure to education and youth empowerment.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues and constituents, many describing him as the most impactful senator Nasarawa North has ever had. One family source called his death a huge blow, noting how his projects are visible in every corner of the zone.

 He is survived by his wife and children. Burial arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.Akwashiki's passing marks a somber start to 2026, reminding many of the fragility of life even among the nation's leaders.
