Israel Offers Nigeria Intelligence Support to Combat Insecurity, Rules Out Unilateral Action

Israel's Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, has emphasized that his country's assistance in addressing Nigeria's ongoing security challenges, particularly the protection of vulnerable communities, will come through close partnership and intelligence sharing rather than any independent military moves.

Speaking in a recent interview, Freeman clarified remarks made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about supporting persecuted Christians worldwide. "What Prime Minister Netanyahu said was very clear: he wants to ensure that persecuted people around the world, including Christians, are protected wherever possible," Freeman explained. "But this is about working hand-in-hand with Nigeria as a partner and ally, not against it or independently."
The ambassador stressed that intelligence cooperation would be the main focus, guided entirely by the Nigerian government. "We'll let Nigerian authorities lead on where and how we can collaborate to tackle insecurity across the country," he said, noting that such discussions remain confidential to preserve their effectiveness. He added that Israel's efforts extend beyond any single community, aiming to curb broader threats like terrorism and violence that affect all Nigerians.
Freeman also highlighted Israel's own record on religious freedom, pointing out that it is the only Middle Eastern country where the Christian population is growing. This comes against the backdrop of heightened international attention on Nigeria's security issues, including recent U.S. airstrikes on militant groups and concerns over alleged persecution.
The offer underscores the longstanding ties between Israel and Nigeria, with potential for deeper collaboration in countering extremism while fully respecting Nigeria's sovereignty.
