Gunmen Attack Plateau Community on New Year’s Eve, Killing Seven and burning houses

As millions across Nigeria rang in 2026 with fireworks and prayers, tragedy struck a quiet village in Plateau State.

Suspected Fulani militia gunmen stormed the Bum community in Chugwi, located in the Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area, late on December 31, 2025, turning a night of hope into one of horror. The assault began around 11 p.m., just minutes into the New Year, catching residents off guard as many were wrapping up crossover celebrations or settling in for the night.

The attackers opened fire indiscriminately, killing at least seven people and wounding several others. They also set numerous houses ablaze, leaving trails of destruction in the rural settlement.

Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM), described the scene in a statement released on January 1. "While the world welcomed the New Year in celebration, residents of Bum were plunged into mourning," he said.

Tengwong noted that the gunmen appeared to exploit the festive distractions to launch their raid, adding the village to a long list of Plateau communities hit by such violence.

By morning, seven bodies had been recovered, but search efforts continued amid fears the death toll could climb. Survivors spoke of chaos as families fled into the surrounding areas, with smoke rising from burned homes and the community left in disarray.

This incident highlights the persistent insecurity plaguing rural parts of Plateau State, where clashes between farmers and herders, along with banditry, have claimed countless lives over the years.

Local leaders have repeatedly called for stronger security measures, especially during holidays when vulnerabilities seem heightened. As investigations begin, residents are left grappling with grief and uncertainty in what should have been a joyful start to the year.
