Fubara Urges Calm Amid Impeachment Threat, Declares 'I Have God' as Supreme Backing

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has called on residents to stay calm and avoid panic as the State House of Assembly presses ahead with impeachment proceedings against him and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.Speaking on Sunday, January 11, 2026, during a special interdenominational church service at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt to mark the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the governor broke his silence on the escalating political tension.

He assured the congregation that the current challenges would be resolved peacefully and that stability would return to the state.Fubara explained that his deliberate decision to remain quiet amid the distractions stemmed from deep faith rather than weakness.

Recalling his earlier remark that “dogs bark when they don’t understand,” he said many people fail to grasp why he refuses to shout or complain. “I know what I have. I know that I have who is supreme, and that’s God,” he declared, emphasizing that divine support gives him unshakable confidence and resilience.

The governor stressed that peace remains the top priority of his administration, urging Rivers people to stay law-abiding and trust that God will see the state through its difficulties. He jokingly noted to the congregation that the service might be the last public event he and his deputy attend together, lightening the mood even as prayers were offered for President Bola Tinubu, himself, the state executive council, and the nation.Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu also addressed the gathering, thanking attendees and echoing calls for good conduct in line with the sermon by Archbishop Blessing Enyindah, who urged leaders and citizens to build legacies of peace, love, and service to God and humanity.

The remarks come just days after the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, initiated the impeachment process on Thursday, accusing Fubara and Odu of gross misconduct. This marks the latest chapter in the long-running feud between Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, which has repeatedly tested the state's political stability.Despite the uncertainty, Fubara's message centered on faith, composure, and hope, reassuring residents that with God on their side, Rivers State will overcome the present storm and continue its path toward progress.
