A Sagamu Magistrate's Court in Ogun State, Nigeria, has remanded Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the 46-year-old driver for British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua, in custody following his arraignment on serious driving offenses.
Kayode appeared in court on January 2, 2026, facing four counts: dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention that resulted in bodily harm and property damage, and operating a vehicle without a valid national driver's license.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges. The case stems from a tragic accident on December 29, 2025, along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The Lexus SUV Kayode was driving, carrying Joshua and two of his close associates—personal trainer Latif Ayodele (also known as Kelvin Olu Ayodele), 36, and strength coach Sina Ghami (or Gami Sina), 36—collided with a stationary truck.
Ayodele and Ghami, both British citizens, died at the scene, while Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries.Joshua, the former two-time heavyweight champion, was hospitalized briefly and discharged on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.
He has since remained in Nigeria, visiting a funeral home to pay respects as the bodies of his friends were prepared for repatriation to the UK.Chief Magistrate O.M. Somefun granted Kayode bail of ₦5 million (about £2,580 or $3,500) with two sureties, but ordered him remanded in prison until those conditions are met.
The trial has been adjourned to January 20, 2026.Police spokesman Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed the arraignment, noting that investigations pointed to overspeeding and possible tire burst during an overtaking maneuver as contributing factors.
The incident has spotlighted ongoing road safety concerns on Nigeria's highways.Kayode, described as a longtime member of Joshua's team, has been in custody since his hospital discharge.
The boxing community continues to rally around Joshua, who narrowly escaped severe injury after reportedly switching seats moments before the crash.
