Anthony Joshua Discharged from Hospital After Tragic Nigeria Car Crash

British heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua has been released from hospital in Nigeria, just days after a devastating car accident that claimed the lives of two of his closest friends and team members.

The 36-year-old former world champion suffered minor injuries in the crash on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on December 29, 2025. He was quickly taken to Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, for treatment and observation, where doctors confirmed he was stable but kept him under care amid the emotional toll.

In a joint statement from the Lagos and Ogun state governments, officials shared that Joshua was discharged late on New Year's Eve. "Anthony Joshua was discharged from hospital late this afternoon though heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends," the statement read.

It went on to praise the medical team for their outstanding care.Tragically, Joshua's longtime friends and key team members, Sina Ghami and Latif "Latz" Ayodele — both also 36 — died at the scene. The pair had been celebrating with Joshua in Nigeria following his recent knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami just weeks earlier.

Preliminary reports suggest the SUV they were traveling in collided with a stationary truck, possibly due to excessive speed and a burst tire. After leaving the hospital, Joshua, accompanied by his mother Yeta Odusanya, headed straight to a funeral home in Lagos to pay his final respects to Ghami and Ayodele as preparations were made for their repatriation.

The boxing world has poured out support for Joshua during this heartbreaking time. Promoter Eddie Hearn called the loss "profoundly sad," while others in the sport echoed calls for privacy as the families grieve.

Joshua, born in Watford to Nigerian parents, was on a holiday visit to his heritage country when the accident occurred. As he recovers at home, questions linger about his future in the ring, including potential big fights in 2026. For now, though, the focus remains on healing from an unimaginable loss.
