VP Shettima, Zulum Visit survivors of Maiduguri Mosque Bomb Blast

VP Shettima and Governor Zulum Visit Survivors of Maiduguri Mosque Bombing.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, joined by Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, visited survivors of a devastating bomb explosion that struck a mosque in Maiduguri's Gamboru Market area on Friday.

The leaders spent time at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), where many of the injured are receiving treatment, offering words of comfort and reassurance amid the ongoing recovery efforts. The attack occurred on Wednesday evening, December 24, during Maghrib prayers at the Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque.

A suspected suicide bomber detonated an explosive device inside the crowded place of worship, killing at least five people and injuring around 35 others, according to police reports. Preliminary investigations point to remnants of a suicide vest at the scene, with authorities attributing the incident to lingering threats from Boko Haram insurgents, though no group has claimed responsibility.

During the hospital visit, Vice President Shettima, speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families. "We are here to reassure the good people of Borno—and Nigerians everywhere—that this government is fully committed to protecting lives and property," he told journalists.

Looking visibly moved by the patients' conditions, he added that "this madness will soon be brought to an end," while praising Governor Zulum for his tireless work in tackling security and humanitarian challenges in the state.Governor Zulum, who has been at the forefront of the state's response, echoed these sentiments, condemning the attack as "barbaric and inhumane" for targeting a sacred space during prayer.

He highlighted ongoing collaboration between state and federal forces to prevent future incidents and ensure lasting peace. The explosion has reignited concerns about security in Nigeria's northeast, a region long plagued by insurgency despite recent periods of relative calm in Maiduguri. Medical staff at UMTH reported admitting several patients, with some in critical condition at the Muhammadu Buhari Trauma Centre.

As investigations continue, authorities have urged residents to stay vigilant while sweeping the area for any additional threats. This show of solidarity from top leaders underscores the nation's resolve to confront terrorism head-on, even as families grieve and survivors begin the long road to recovery.
