A heartwarming video showing the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, dancing joyfully with members of the Umu Ada Association has taken social media by storm, drawing admiration from Nigerians at home and abroad.
The clip, which surfaced online over the weekend, captured the former Nigerian Finance Minister in a lively moment during a visit to Umuahia, Abia State. Dressed simply and surrounded by cheering women, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala was seen joining the traditional dance steps of the Umu Ada women — a respected group made up of daughters of the community.
The atmosphere was filled with laughter, music and cultural pride.
Many social media users praised the WTO chief for her humility and strong connection to grassroots culture despite her global status. Commentators described the moment as refreshing, noting that it highlighted the human side of one of Africa’s most influential economic leaders.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, a former Managing Director of the World Bank and Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister for the Economy under former President Goodluck Jonathan, has long been celebrated for breaking barriers on the global stage. The viral video, however, reminded many Nigerians that beyond international boardrooms, she remains deeply connected to local traditions and community life.
The Umu Ada Association members also expressed pride in hosting the global trade chief, describing the encounter as memorable and inspiring for women in the community.
