Port Harcourt – Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State governor, has fired a fresh salvo, accusing opportunistic politicians of flocking to the state in a bid to grab a slice of the reported N600 billion left in its treasury.
Speaking on Saturday during a meeting with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly at their quarters along Aba Road in Port Harcourt, Wike claimed that the public disclosure of the massive funds has turned Rivers into a magnet for political hustlers.
He pointed fingers at the Assembly Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, for first revealing in November that the former Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), handed over N600 billion when the six-month emergency rule ended on September 18.The emergency rule had been imposed by President Bola Tinubu back in March amid the lingering political crisis in the state.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who recently switched from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, later confirmed he met about N600 billion upon resuming office, after leaving over N300 billion before his temporary suspension.Wike didn't hold back, saying Nigerian politicians have always had an eye on Rivers' wealth. "Go and study it – they like Rivers money," he told the lawmakers. He regretted the announcement, arguing it was a blunder that invited outsiders.
Now, he said, visitors pour in, showering praise on Fubara while privately positioning for handouts. Their trick? Publicly bashing him to curry favor."To get a share of that N600 billion, they say 'Wike's time is over' or 'enough is enough for Wike,' and they walk away smiling with something," Wike added, calling some of them "political 419ers" – fraudsters in suits.
He warned that these maneuvers won't change the political landscape, insisting agreements must be honored. As Rivers' longstanding feud between Wike's camp and Fubara's administration simmers on, this latest outburst highlights how money talks louder than loyalty in the oil-rich state's power games.
