Peter Obi and Senator Abaribe Lead Major Defections to ADC in Dramatic New Year's Eve Shift

Enugu came alive on December 31, 2025, as former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and prominent Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant realignment in Nigeria's opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

The event at Nike Lake Resort drew a crowd of political heavyweights from the South-East and beyond, including former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, Senators Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, Gilbert Nnaji, and Sam Egwu, as well as former governors like Achike Udenwa. National Chairman of the ADC, former Senate President David Mark, was also present, underscoring the party's growing coalition.

Peter Obi, who ran a strong third in the 2023 presidential race on the Labour Party ticket, announced his move from the LP, describing it as part of a broader effort to "rescue Nigeria" from ongoing challenges. "We're ending this year with hope that 2026 begins our rescue journey," Obi said, emphasizing unity among opposition forces to tackle economic hardship, insecurity, and governance issues under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Shortly after, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South and a veteran lawmaker who had switched to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2023 after years with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), revealed he had resigned from APGA that morning. "So as of now, I am fully in ADC, following my brother and our leader, Mr. Peter Obi," Abaribe declared to cheers from the audience.

He highlighted the ADC's vision for good governance and national renewal, citing irreconcilable differences with APGA's leadership over internal democracy and strategy.

The defections follow months of speculation and consultations, with sources saying they align South-East leaders with a national opposition coalition that includes figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Reactions poured in quickly—Atiku welcomed Obi, calling it a "significant moment" for building a virile opposition, while the ADC expressed delight, noting Obi's equal standing in the party.

Not everyone followed suit; Abia Governor Alex Otti reaffirmed his commitment to staying in the Labour Party. Still, today's moves signal a consolidating front aimed at challenging the APC in 2027, injecting fresh energy into Nigeria's political scene as the new year dawns.
