A heated argument over a mere N4,000 debt turned deadly in Ogun State, leaving one man dead and his stepbrother in police custody.
Lekan Lasisi, a local hunter, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command following the shooting of his stepbrother in Abule Tuntun, Odeda Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on December 19, 2025, after tensions boiled over regarding the deceased's habit of borrowing money without repaying.According to Lasisi's account during police interrogation, the trouble started when a creditor approached him at a bus stop, complaining that his stepbrother owed her N4,000.
Frustrated by repeated complaints from lenders who often turned to him for settlement, Lasisi confronted his stepbrother upon the latter's return from the market, where he had sold garri. The discussion quickly escalated.
Lasisi said his stepbrother, known for drinking and getting into trouble, became aggressive and pulled out a cutlass. In response, Lasisi drew his hunting gun, insisting the shot that killed his stepbrother was accidental—he claimed he didn't even realize the trigger had been pulled until it was too late.
In a video of his confession that circulated online, a remorseful Lasisi pleaded for mercy, mentioning his sick mother and the family hardship that would follow. "I rushed to lift him when I saw what happened because he was my brother," he said.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Babseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the arrest and noted that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further probing. Authorities are treating it as a homicide, though Lasisi maintains it was not intentional. This tragic event highlights how small financial disputes can spiral out of control in close-knit families, ending in irreversible loss.
