The victims, abducted on Monday, December 15, include two engineers, identified as Ademola Afolabi and Umar Lade, and two labourers, identified as Fatai and Akin, and a driver identified as Yusuf.
Families of five workers abducted at a road construction site along the Sabaja/Owa-Onire Road in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State have urgently appealed to the state government and security agencies to secure their release.
Speaking to Sobi FM on Tuesday on behalf of the families, Mallam Issa Abdullahi revealed that the kidnappers had contacted them, demanding a ransom of ₦500 million.
Family members say they are traumatized and financially incapable of raising such an amount, describing the demand as unrealistic and cruel. Some of the victims are said to be breadwinners whose absence has already plunged their families into severe hardship.
Community leaders and civil society groups have joined the call for action, urging the government to intensify security operations and ensure the safe rescue of the workers without loss of life. They warned that the rising cases of abductions for ransom are worsening insecurity and threatening economic activities, especially for workers who must travel long distances daily.
Meanwhile, security agencies have confirmed awareness of the incident and assured the public that efforts are underway to track the perpetrators and secure the release of the victims. Families, however, continue to plead for swift action, saying time is critical and the lives of the abducted workers hang in the balance.
