Eyo Masquerades Clash with Residents as Lagos Festival Turns ChaoticLagos,

What began as a vibrant celebration of Lagos' rich cultural heritage quickly descended into chaos today during the long-awaited Eyo Festival, as groups of masquerades portedly assaulted several residents on Lagos Island.

The iconic Adamu Orisha Play, also known as the Eyo Festival, returned after an eight-year hiatus to honor late prominent figures including Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji (mother of President Bola Tinubu), former governors Alhaji Lateef Jakande and Sir Michael Otedola, and Brigadier Mobolaji Johnson. Thousands of spectators, tourists, and dignitaries – among them President Bola Tinubu, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu – gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square for the colorful procession of white-clad Eyos, complete with rhythmic chants, dances, and towering hats.

However, tensions flared when some masquerades, armed with their traditional Opambata staffs, allegedly lashed out at residents and onlookers who violated festival rules. Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion as Eyos enforced prohibitions against wearing shoes, hats, or smoking in their presence, leading to physical confrontations in crowded areas around Isale Eko and Oke-Popo.One resident, who asked not to be named, said the scuffles started over minor infractions but escalated quickly. "It's tradition that they discipline rule-breakers, but today it felt more aggressive with the huge crowds," he told reporters.Authorities had issued stern warnings ahead of the event.

Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, explicitly cautioned against "indiscriminate beating" or harassment, stressing that such acts would face penalties. President Tinubu also urged participants to avoid violence and alcohol during a pre-festival meeting.

Despite heavy security deployment and traffic diversions, the incidents marred what was meant to be a peaceful showcase of Yoruba culture. Police confirmed they intervened in several altercations, though no serious injuries or arrests were immediately reported.Organizers, including Chief Adebola Dosunmu, the Olori Eyo, emphasized that the festival's spirit is one of peace and unity.

As the processions wound down, many attendees still praised the spectacle's beauty, hoping the clashes wouldn't overshadow Lagos' enduring traditions. The event, restricted to Lagos Island this year, drew massive crowds and boosted local tourism during the Detty December season. Officials say it reinforces the city's identity while honoring its legends.
