Amorim Proud of Manchester United's Grit in Hard-Fought Win Over Newcastle Despite Fresh Injury Worry

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim hailed his team's resilience after they ground out a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, admitting the players had to "suffer together" to secure the three points.

The Red Devils, depleted by a string of absences including captain Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, United took the lead through Patrick Dorgu's stunning first-half volley – the Danish wing-back's first goal for the club. United dominated the early exchanges after Amorim surprisingly ditched his preferred back three for a four, allowing more attacking freedom.

But the second half was a different story, Newcastle piled on the pressure, dominating possession and forcing United deep into their own half. Amorim's side switched to a back five to hold firm, blocking crosses and throwing bodies on the line to preserve their first clean sheet in months."We were just trying to survive in the second half," Amorim said afterwards. "We suffered so much more than in other games, but the spirit was there – everyone putting everything on the line. If we keep that togetherness, we'll win a lot of games."The win lifted United up to fifth in the Premier League, a welcome boost amid a tricky festive period.

Yet the celebrations were tempered by a new injury concern. Midfielder Mason Mount, who had been impressive in the first half, felt something at the break and was substituted as a precaution. "He wanted to continue, which shows his commitment," Amorim noted, "but we can't risk losing more players right now."With Fernandes sidelined by a muscle issue and several others away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Amorim will be hoping Mount's problem proves minor as United prepare for a busy schedule ahead.
