Adamawa Governor Grants Pardon To Farmer, Sunday Jackson, Sentenced To Death For Killing Herder

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has granted a pardon to Sunday Jackson, a farmer who was previously sentenced to death for killing a herder during a violent clash in the state. The decision, announced on Wednesday, has drawn wide public attention and sparked conversations around justice, reconciliation, and the long-running tensions between farmers and herders.

Sunday Jackson was convicted several years ago after a confrontation with a herder reportedly turned deadly. The case became controversial, with supporters insisting the farmer acted in self-defence, while others argued that the law had taken its course. Over time, civil society groups, religious leaders, and human rights advocates appealed to the state government to review the sentence, citing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In granting the pardon, Governor Fintiri said the decision followed careful consideration and consultations with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. He noted that the move was aimed at promoting peace, healing, and forgiveness, especially in rural communities often affected by violent disputes.

The governor also urged residents to embrace dialogue and lawful means of resolving conflicts, stressing that violence only deepens division and suffering. Jackson’s release is expected to bring relief to his family, while the state government reaffirmed its commitment to justice, coexistence, and the protection of lives across Adamawa State.
