Nigerian Army Pushes for Stronger Ties with US to Combat Rising Insecurity

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for a deeper and more robust strategic partnership between the Nigerian Army and the United States Army to effectively address the country's complex and evolving security challenges.

Speaking on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, during a high-level engagement, Lt. Gen. Shaibu emphasized the need to build on existing cooperation, highlighting the Nigerian Army's keen interest in tapping into the U.S. military's extensive expertise in both kinetic and non-kinetic operations.

He pointed out that enhanced collaboration could significantly boost operational effectiveness, strengthen institutional capacity, refine military doctrine, and develop long-term strategic capabilities. This appeal comes against the backdrop of persistent threats from terrorism, banditry, and violent extremism across Nigeria's northern regions, where insurgents and criminal groups continue to exploit vulnerabilities despite ongoing military efforts.

Recent developments, including joint intelligence sharing and coordinated airstrikes with U.S. support late last year, have already demonstrated the value of bilateral engagement in targeting militant positions.Lt. Gen. Shaibu stressed that closer ties would not only improve tactical responses but also foster broader institutional reforms, better training programs, and improved resource utilization—key elements in sustaining momentum against these threats.

As Nigeria grapples with multifaceted insecurity that demands both immediate action and sustainable solutions, the push for intensified U.S. partnership signals a strategic commitment to leveraging international expertise while reinforcing national security priorities.

The proposal aligns with recent deliveries of military equipment from the United States and ongoing discussions aimed at countering shared regional threats, underscoring the mutual benefits of a strengthened alliance in promoting stability across West Africa.
