Lagos Taskforce Nabs Fake Navy Captain and Two Accomplices in Oworonshoki Demolition Bust

In a swift operation that highlights growing vigilance against impersonation scams, the Lagos State Taskforce has arrested three suspects posing as Nigerian Navy officers, including a man claiming to be a captain, in connection with attempts to disrupt a government demolition exercise in Oworonshoki.

The arrests, announced on Thursday, January 15, 2026, came after the principal suspect, James K. Robert (also referred to as James Robert), allegedly showed up in full naval uniform at the Taskforce office to demand the release of vehicles seized during the clearance of illegal shanties and encroachments on government land.

When his request was denied, the situation escalated—he reportedly turned aggressive, threatening a clash between his supposed naval team and Taskforce operatives.Chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, grew suspicious during the encounter due to glaring inconsistencies: improperly worn service ribbons, missing regimental insignia, and an overall demeanor that didn't match that of a genuine senior naval officer. Acting quickly, Akerele contacted the Naval Police Unit of the Nigerian Navy, who confirmed Robert was not a serving personnel.

Before the suspects could react, officers from the Nigerian Navy Military Police arrived on the scene and took James K. Robert, his wife (one of the accomplices), and an aide into custody. The trio had reportedly been using their fake identities to intimidate residents, evade enforcement actions, defraud people, and obstruct lawful government operations across the state.

The suspects had already been under surveillance following repeated complaints from the public and prior confrontations with Taskforce teams during field operations. Spokesperson Abdulraheem Gbadeyan emphasized that the arrests send a strong message: impersonators will face prosecution to protect the integrity of Nigeria's armed forces and maintain public trust.

This incident underscores the persistent challenge of uniform fraud in Lagos, where criminals exploit military disguises for extortion and interference. Authorities urged residents to stay alert, verify identities, and report suspicious activities through official channels.
