Bayelsa Police Command Detains Two Officers Over Brutal Assault on Tricycle Rider

The Bayelsa State Police Command has swiftly detained two of its officers following a disturbing viral video that captured them brutally assaulting a tricycle rider in the state capital. The footage, which surfaced on social media and was widely shared by platforms including SaharaReporters, shows the uniformed policemen stopping the keke operator and demanding his driver's licence.

When the rider attempted to retrieve a tyre that had been removed from his vehicle, the officers allegedly shoved him to the ground and rained blows on him repeatedly. The shocking clip sparked immediate public outrage, prompting the state Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, to condemn the incident in the strongest possible terms.

Describing the officers' actions as completely unacceptable and a clear violation of professional policing standards, he ordered their immediate arrest. In an official statement released on Saturday, January 17, 2026, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Musa Mohammed confirmed that the two officers are now in custody. Disciplinary proceedings have begun in line with the Police Act and other relevant regulations.CP Edebor emphasized that the command has zero tolerance for any form of human rights abuse, unprofessional behaviour, or brutality by its personnel.

He reiterated the police force's commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of all citizens while upholding lawful and ethical standards across Bayelsa State. This decisive response highlights efforts to address misconduct within the ranks and restore public confidence in law enforcement, especially amid growing concerns over police excesses in everyday interactions with citizens. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for continuous training and accountability in the Nigeria Police Force.
