A devastating petrol tanker explosion rocked the Ihiala axis of the Onitsha-Owerri Road in Anambra State on Sunday, claiming the lives of two people and leaving another seriously injured.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. when a fully loaded petrol tanker collided with a vehicle, smashed into a road barricade opposite the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) office, and spilled its contents. The spilled fuel quickly ignited, triggering a massive explosion and fire that engulfed the scene.
According to FRSC Sector Public Education Officer Margaret Onabe, the victims included the tanker's driver and his conductor (motor boy), who were burnt to death instantly at the scene. A commercial motorcycle rider caught in the chaos sustained varying degrees of injuries and was promptly rescued and rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala for treatment.
The collision involved three male adults in total, with the two tanker crew members perishing on the spot amid the inferno. Emergency responders worked to contain the blaze and secure the area, though the explosion caused significant panic among nearby residents and motorists.
