Benue @50: Alia Honours Gen Murtala, Pardons 14 Inmates

As Benue State marked its golden jubilee on February 3, 2026—exactly 50 years since its creation—Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia used the milestone to pay tribute to key figures in the state's history while extending a gesture of compassion to those in custody.

In a statewide broadcast from Government House in Makurdi, the governor announced plans to immortalise the late General Murtala Muhammed, the former Head of State whose administration brought Benue into existence through a decree in 1976. Alia emphasised the importance of recognising those who laid the foundation for the state, describing General Murtala's role as pivotal in shaping its enduring identity. The commemoration also included honours for other prominent leaders and icons from Benue, such as journalist and publisher Chief Dan Agbese, alongside various renamings of institutions to preserve their legacies.

In a separate but equally significant move, Governor Alia exercised his prerogative of mercy by granting clemency to 14 inmates serving various terms in correctional facilities across the state. Those pardoned include Akaajime Imoter, Kongusu Terzugwe, Terngu Orshi, Ornaa Achagh, Zwa Achir, Terkimbi Amadu, Iorpenda Christian, Aondowaae Terlumun, Oriba John, Sughnen Terfa James, Akaahar Isaac, Ordam Thankgod, Gwayem Agba James, and Iorfa Terkimbi. Additionally, one inmate, Terhumba Aondona, saw his 10-year sentence reduced to four years.

Many residents and observers have welcomed the gestures as a fitting blend of historical recognition and humanitarian action on this landmark occasion.
