Vice President Kashim Shettima Visits Kwara in Wake of Deadly Woro Attack

Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Kwara State on Saturday to assess the aftermath of a devastating attack on Woro village in Kaiama Local Government Area, where gunmen killed at least 75 residents—some reports putting the toll even higher, with over 100 lives lost.

The visit came on the direct instructions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who tasked the vice president with evaluating the situation firsthand and delivering the federal government's heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and community.

Shettima was received at the Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Senator Sadiq Umar representing Kwara North, and other senior state officials. From there, he proceeded toward Woro to meet with affected residents and local leaders.

The assault, which occurred last Tuesday, saw suspected terrorists—linked by some accounts to extremist groups like the Mamuda sect or Boko Haram elements—invade the community, opening fire indiscriminately, setting homes ablaze, and forcing many villagers to flee into surrounding bushes. Authorities have described it as a coordinated act of terrorism rather than mere communal clashes or banditry, with the attackers reportedly targeting those who resisted indoctrination.

In response to the tragedy, President Tinubu has already ordered the deployment of additional troops to the area to restore calm, pursue the perpetrators, and prevent further violence. During his visit, Vice President Shettima condemned the killings as barbaric and unacceptable, vowing that the federal government would leave no stone unturned in bringing those responsible to justice. He emphasized that such attacks strike at the heart of Nigeria's security and unity, reassuring the people of Kwara that the government stands firmly with them.

As investigations continue and security forces intensify their manhunt, Shettima's presence underscores the administration's commitment to supporting affected communities and restoring peace.
