The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the state's Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, to strictly comply with a fresh interim court order restraining any further action on the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday and signed by party spokesperson Darlington Nwauju, the APC described the ongoing push by the Rivers State House of Assembly as a "choreographed legislative overreach" that threatens to destabilize governance and undermine democratic principles in the state.
The directive follows an interim injunction granted on Friday by Justice F. A. Fiberesima of the Rivers State High Court in Suit No. OYHC/7/CS/2026. The order specifically bars the Chief Judge from receiving, forwarding, considering, or acting on any resolutions, letters, or related documents from the Assembly aimed at setting up a probe panel into alleged gross misconduct by the governor and his deputy.
The restraint, which lasts for seven days pending a full hearing scheduled for January 23, 2026, also applies to Speaker Martin Amaewhule and other lawmakers involved. The APC, led by Chairman Emeka Beke, emphasized that the Chief Judge has a clear legal duty to uphold the court's directive.
The party expressed deep concern over the Assembly's decision to press ahead with the impeachment despite the subsisting order, accusing some lawmakers—including those claiming loyalty to the APC and President Bola Tinubu—of pursuing actions that run counter to the party's collective interests and long-term survival in Rivers State.
"This needless legislative overreach serves as a dangerous footnote to the health and unity of our party," the statement warned, adding that the move could deepen internal divisions and erode public confidence in democratic institutions.
The latest crisis marks yet another chapter in the prolonged political tensions in Rivers State, with this being the third impeachment attempt against Governor Fubara since he took office. The APC urged all parties to prioritize dialogue and respect for the rule of law to avoid further escalation and safeguard the state's stability.
