Troops from the Nigerian Army's 14 Brigade, based in Ohafia, Abia State, have discovered two locally made improvised explosive devices (IEDs) hidden in a forest at Umuchinma, in the Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area.
The find came during a clearance operation on February 8, 2026, around 9:00 a.m., as soldiers swept along the Umuchinma pipeline route that stretches into the dense forest. Acting Assistant Public Relations Officer, Captain Mazinho Attah, confirmed the discovery in a statement, describing the devices as crude but potentially deadly homemade bombs.
According to the brigade, the IEDs were constructed using 5kg gas cylinders packed with nails, water-gel explosives, two detonators, and electrical cables—components that point to makeshift assembly by criminal elements operating in the region.
This recovery forms part of intensified security efforts targeting criminal hideouts and threats in Abia's forested areas, where such devices could endanger civilians, security personnel, and critical infrastructure like pipelines. The troops safely handled the explosives, preventing any immediate risk.
