In a chilling escalation of insecurity in northern Nigeria, the remote village of Magarau in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State now lies eerily abandoned. Residents have fled en masse, leaving behind empty homes, demolished buildings, and scattered belongings after a brutal attack by armed bandits reportedly loyal to notorious kingpin Bello Turji.
The assailants killed the village head of Magarau, along with the chief imam and several other community members. Homes were looted, with food items and other valuables carted away, while structures were partially destroyed in the rampage. A circulating video captures the haunting aftermath: deserted streets, the late chief imam’s empty home standing as a silent witness, and widespread devastation that has turned a once-thriving settlement into a ghost village.
“No one is living there anymore,” a narrator in the footage explains, highlighting how the relentless violence has forced every family to seek safety elsewhere. The attack underscores the growing fear gripping rural communities in the region, where bandit groups continue to operate with impunity, targeting leaders and civilians alike.
