A wave of shock and grief has gripped the Omoku community in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of Rivers State following the brutal murder of a prominent youth leader and his aide.
Gunmen, widely suspected to be cultists, launched a deadly attack on Thursday evening, February 5, 2026, at a popular drinking spot along Ogolo Street, off Palace Road. The assailants shot and killed Chigozie Oluwu, the personal aide to the youth leader, on the spot. They then abducted Comrade Ifeanyi Azuazu, the recently elected President of the Omoku Youth Federation (OYF), who had assumed the position just two months earlier.
Hopes for Azuazu's safe return quickly faded. On Friday afternoon, February 6, members of the ONELGA Security and Planning Advisory Committee (OSPAC), working alongside local security networks and police, recovered his headless body from a forest in the Elieta area of Omoku. OSPAC spokesman Godnews Nkem confirmed the grim discovery, stating that while Oluwu was killed during the initial assault, Azuazu was taken alive and later murdered by his captors before his remains were dumped.
The Rivers State Police Command has since confirmed the incident. Public Relations Officer CSP Grace Iringe-Koko described it as cult-related and noted that the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a full-scale investigation to track down and apprehend those responsible.
The killings have heightened fears across the community, with residents and local leaders calling for stronger security measures to curb the escalating violence linked to cult activities in the area.
