The Acting DG of NAFDAC, Mrs Yetunde Oni, said that henceforth, any result coming from its laboratory in Kaduna “is competent and will be recognised internationally.’’

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has received the International Organisation of Standardisation (ISO) 17025 accreditation for its laboratory in Kaduna State.

Receiving the certificate on Thursday in Abuja, the Acting Director-General of NAFDAC, Mrs Yetunde Oni, said that henceforth, any result coming from its laboratory in Kaduna “is competent and will be recognised internationally.’’

She said that NAFDAC’s laboratory in Oshodi, Yaba in Lagos State and Agro in Anambra, as well as Kaduna had received ISO’s certification.

According to her, the laboratories in Maiduguri, Port-Hacourt and another one in Yaba were on the queue for certification, adding that they would be accredited before the end of 2017.

The NAFDAC acting director-general disclosed that the process of accreditation for the Kaduna laboratory started in November 2015 with assessment of facilities by experts from United States of America.

Oni said that test such like a High Liquid Performance Chromatography, food products, dissolution test and ultra violent, among others would henceforth be conducted in the newly accredited laboratory in Kaduna.

The NAFDAC boss stated that henceforth, drugs and food products’ test from North-West, North-East and North-Central parts of the country would be conducted in the laboratory.

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of United States Pharmacopeia (USP), Dr Ronald Piervincenzi, said that the accreditation was a giant stride achieved by NAFDAC.

Piervincenzi said that the development was an indication that the agency was committed to the fight against unwholesome and counterfeit drugs in the country.

He said that this would also help to ensure quality drugs for a topical disease like malaria.

According to him, USP was committed and will continue to provide technical assistant to NAFDAC, as well as promoting quality medicine and medical products.

The Minister of State for Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire urged NAFDAC to continue to be transparent and courageous in discharging its duties.

Ehanire said that the present government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari would continue to support the agency to ensure that only regulated products were used in Nigeria.

He commended the agency for the milestone achieved in the certification of Kaduna laboratory and urged it to sustain the tempo and work to ensure that other laboratories were accredited by ISO.
