Polio: Katsina's Sandamu LG inset to immunise 52,000 children

Once a worldwide scourge, polio is still endemic in three countries -- Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan

The council’s Director of Primary Health Care said the council has taken delivery of enough vaccines from the state primary health care agency.

The Sandamu Local Council of Katsina State says it will immunise 52,000 children in the ongoing exercise in the area.

Hajiya Sakina Zango, the council’s Director of Primary Health Care (PHC), disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sandamu on Monday.

She said the council has taken delivery of enough vaccines from the state primary health care agency, and engaged 89 trained vaccinators and 11 focal persons.

Zango said the four-day exercise would be conducted across the 11 electoral wards in the area, stressing that “our vaccinators will go house to house and school to school for a wider and effective coverage’’.

“The exercise kick started on the 23rd of this month and it would end by next Tuesday 27th of this month,” she said.

She said the council has increased Routine Immunisation Centeres (RIC) from seven to 10.

However, the director said “we conduct immunisation against measles, meningitis and other child killer diseases in those centres’’.

She said the area has achieved 100 per cent compliance on immunisation due the enlightenment campaign through radio, traditional and religious leaders.

Alhaji Sale Isa, the Sole Administrator of the council, commended the people of the area for their cooperation and understanding which led to the success of the exercise.

He called on parents to sustain the tempo, pledging the council’s resolve to continue to support immunisation campaigns to promote healthy and productive living among residents.

Isa disclosed that one case of meningitis was recorded at Jama’ar Chiroma village, but the victim survived it.
