The scheme was initiated by the NYSC to assist rural dwellers with free medical and healthcare services.
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it will provide free healthcare services under its Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) scheme to 10,000 rural dwellers in Zamfara.
The NYSC Coordinator in the state, Hajiya Rahamatu Sanda, said this on Monday while declaring open the 2017 First Quarter HIRD Scheme at Jaurin-Rogo Village in Gusau Local Government Area.
The coordinator said that many communities had been selected for this year’s programme, which was estimated at about 10,000 beneficiaries.
“In each of the selected communities, we are targeting a large number of beneficiaries,” she said.
Sanda explained that the scheme was initiated by the NYSC to assist rural dwellers with free medical and healthcare services, considering the health challenges faced by people in rural areas.
She noted that people from rural areas suffered various diseases, saying that many of them had no financial capacity to go to hospitals.
“That is why the NYSC came up with this initiative to assist people, especially the poor at the grassroots level, so that various diseases such as malaria, diabetes, cholera and typhoid would be treated during the outreach," Sanda said.
She said that medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical laboratory scientists, community health officers, NYSC health officials and members of the NYSC Health Community Development Service (CDS) group, had been deployed for the exercise.
The Village Head of Jaurin-Rogo Community, Alhaji Aliyu Usman, commended the NYSC for selecting his community to start the programme in the state.
Usman said that the initiative would improve healthcare services and delivery in rural communities as many people had been suffering from various diseases “but they do not have any support to improve their health’’.
Some of the beneficiaries, Asma’u Hussaini and Maimunat Sani, thanked the NYSC for the assistance.
The beneficiaries said their children had been treated and provided with drugs by the NYSC.
