The CPC based its conclusion on the fact that both drinks contain benzoic acid levels above the limit approved by the Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS).
The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) has warned Nigerians that Mirinda and Lucozade soft drinks are not safe for consumption.
The CPC based its conclusion on the fact that both drinks contain benzoic acid levels above the limit approved by the Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS).
The NIS limit for benzoic acid is 250mg/kg with Vitamin C and 300mg/Kg without Vitamin C.
However, tests conducted by the CPC revealed that Mirinda contains benzoic acid ranging between 0.56mg/L to 330.9mg/L while Lucozade was marked at between 2.26mg/L to 323.53mg/L.
Mirinda is a product of the Seven Up Bottling Company while Lucozade is made by Suntory Beverage & Food Nigeria.
“The Council also observed from the results that there were isolated cases of Mirinda and Lucozade with Benzoic Acid levels of 330.9mg/L and 323.53mg/L respectively, which are above the NIS limit,” CPC Director General, Mrs Dupe Atoki, said in a statement.
Atoki also said NAFDAC and SON have been informed of the investigation adding that it was necessary to review the “benzoic acid limits in soft drinks as the current standard, which has been in existence since 2008 is overdue for review.”
Attempts to speak with representatives of Suntory and Seven Up have so far been unsuccessful.

The CPC said further that the benzoic acid levels in Fanta Orange ranged from 5.09mg/L to 197.0mg/L while that of Sprite ranged from 2.82mg/L to 239.0mg/L, indicating that both soft drinks were safe for Nigerian consumers as they contained benzoic acid within the limit approved by the NIS.
The revelation comes after a Lagos Court, in March, warned Nigerians that consuming Fanta and Sprite with Vitamin C could be dangerous.
The Igbosere High Court also told the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to force the Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) Plc to place a written warning on the drinks.
