Rivers Rerun Election: INEC refutes Wike’s allegations of rigging

Mahmood Yakubu

Yakubu, who said the allegations are baseless, called on Wike to let security agencies conclude their investigation.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has debunked Governor Nyesom Wike’s allegations that it is planning to rig the upcoming rerun election in Rivers.

Governor Wike had earlier accused the electoral body, police and All Progressives Congress (APC) of planning to manipulate the results of the poll.

According to Punch, Yakubu also described the Rivers state Governor’s allegations as baseless.

The INEC Chairman also called on Wike to let the relevant security agencies conclude their investigation.

Yakubu, speaking through his Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, said “Governor Wike’s allegations are baseless and unfortunate. INEC is a responsible organisation that takes its responsibilities very seriously.

“The commission could not have been aware of such a criminal act.  I will advise the governor to stop throwing stones at INEC at the slightest opportunity.”

Adding that “Well, we believe that the Nigeria Police have competent officers who will investigate this development and bring all the culprits to book.

“It is too early for anybody to draw conclusions. We should allow the Police to complete their investigation.

“INEC wants the case thoroughly investigated and the culprits and their sponsors prosecuted.”

The Rivers state chapter of the APC has also debunked Governor Nyesom Wike’s allegations of rigging.
