Flags To Fly At Half-Mast For Late Deputy Governor: As Bayelsa Gov Declares Three-Day Mourning

Bayelsa State Government has announced with “deep regret and profound shock” the sudden passing of its Deputy Governor, Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo.

In a statement released on Friday, December 12, 2025, the government confirmed that Ewhrudjakpo died on Thursday, December 11, at the age of 60.

According to the official announcement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Hon. (Mrs.) Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, the Deputy Governor had been active and performing official duties earlier on the day he passed away.

"He collapsed while proceeding to a scheduled meeting within his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was later confirmed dead," the statement read.

Governor Douye Diri, in the release, described the Deputy Governor's demise as "not just painful," but "a great loss to the Government, people of Bayelsa State and the nation."

Mr. Ewhrudjakpo was a prominent figure in Bayelsa politics and public service, with a distinguished career spanning several key roles, including Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, and, from 2020 until his passing, Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State.

Governor Diri, on behalf of the government and people of Bayelsa State, extended "heartfelt condolences" to the deceased's wife, Mrs. Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, their children, the Ewhrudjakpo family, Ofoni Federated Community, and all citizens of the State, including former Governor Senator Henry Seriake Dickson.

In honour of the late Deputy Governor, Governor Diri has immediately declared a State Mourning for three working days, commencing on Friday, December 12, 2025.

As a mark of respect, the Governor has mandated that all flags are to fly at half-mast throughout the state during this period.
