According to Lagos State Commissioner of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the incident occurred during an enforcement operation at Sinari Daranijo Street, Victoria Island, where officials were carrying out duties assigned to them.
The eight defendants pleaded not guilty and were remanded in a correctional centre until January 28, 2026, pending the advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
Wahab said the situation escalated after the restaurant had earlier been sealed by the government during regulatory enforcement.
The Yakoyo restaurant not only broke the government’s seal, they went further to unleash armed thugs on officials who were lawfully carrying out their duties. This crosses every line."
He also outlined the state government’s position on incidents in which its personnel are obstructed during official assignments.
In a previous post, he said, "Let it be clear: Any individual or business that assaults, obstructs, or threatens government officers on duty will face decisive action. Such premises will be sealed without hesitation, and those responsible will be prosecuted."
Wahab further referred to the government’s broader approach to enforcement efforts in the state.
We will not allow lawlessness to take root in Lagos. No one is above the law, and any attempt to intimidate government officials will be met with firm and immediate consequences," he said.
Officials confirmed that the restaurant’s supervisor had been arrested and the premises sealed. They also stated that additional arrests may be made as investigations continue.
