The anti-vandalism team of the Nigeria
Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ogun
State Command has arrested a 40-year-old
father of seven in connection with
vandalism. Raji Akeem who claimed to have come from
Alagbado area of Lagos State was arrested
at Ipara in Remo North Local Government
Area of Ogun State while siphoning fuel
from a pipeline already vandalised into their
waiting buses full of jerry-cans and drums. In a statement, Public Relations
Officer, Kareem Olanrewaju said, "Some of
the vandals took to their heels immediately
they sighted our men; they were pursued
and one of them was arrested while others
escaped. "The syndicate which specialises in
vandalising pipelines and trading in
petroleum products siphoned from pipelines
hid drums and kegs inside those buses to
prevent being detected by security
operatives." Raji explained that pipeline vandalism had
been lucrative and it served as a means of
survival because he realises minimum of
N40,000 on each trip. "The case will be thoroughly investigated.
This period of the year is a period when the
hoodlums like to make quick money and we
have taken measures to curtail them. "Items recovered from him are two Ford
buses with number plates Lagos FKJ 342 XC
and Lagos LSD 522 XE,13 drums of petroleum
product, 11 of 25-litre kegs containing
petroleum products, nine empty drums and
43 empty 50-litre kegs," the NSCDC said.
