The long standing debate on marijuana legalisation received a thrust today with the Dalai Lama saying that he totally supported its use for medicinal purposes, according to reports.
Addressing attendees at an event in the state of Guanajuato on Tuesday, the spiritual leader said that the use of marijuana in medicine can be considered an '"exception" and should be allowed, reported AFP.
However, at the same time, he took a strong stand against its recreational use, AFP reported. This was in response to a question from the audience about his opinions on the legalisation of marijuana.
Mexico is presently having discussions about whether or not to legalise the drug. The event was being hosted by the country's former president Vicente Fox, who supports its legalisation in an attempt to channel money away from the powerful operational drug cartels, and to break them.
