Polio: Islamic scholar urges parents to accept vaccine

Once a worldwide scourge, polio is still endemic in three countries -- Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan

He said children needed to be immunized against the virus to protect ensure that they remained healthy.

An Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman- Bauchi, has called on the parents and caregivers to ensure that their children below the age of five, were immunized against the wild polio virus.

Sheikh Bauchi made the call when journalists, under the aegis of Journalist Initiative on Immunization Against Polio’ (JAP), Kaduna state chapter, visited him on Monday in Kaduna.

He said children needed to be immunized against the virus to protect ensure that they remained healthy.

“Polio vaccines have no effect on the body,so I appeal to all parents  and  caregivers to present their children for vaccination,” he said.

He said the fight against wild polio virus was not over yet, adding that the support and cooperation of everybody, was desirable.

The renowned scholar promised to support polio activities in all forms so as to end polio in Nigeria.

He commended the effort of the State Government, Development partners and NGOs, for their commitment towards ensuring that citizens enjoyed good health.

Earlier in his speech, Kaduna state coordinator of JAP, Lawal Dogara, said they were committed to educating parents on the importance of polio immunization, especially in non-compliant settlements.

He urged the parents to always see polio immunization as the only way to end the threat of the virus in Nigeria.
